In a blog I wrote the other day about Steve Carlton and the record he had in 1972, that I thought there would not be another dominant pitcher like him. I might be wrong-it want be the first time. Santana last night pitched 7 shut out innings and the Mets won 1-0. He is 4-1 this season with an ERA of 0.91. I believe the Mets have only scored 12 runs for him in 6 starts this year, so he has to pitch a shutout to win.

Here’s a fact I didn’t realize but in his last 23 starts he has lost only 1 time-pretty remarkable wouldn’t you say. If he keeps pitching like this he may break Bob Gibson’s ERA of 1.12(a modern day record) set in 1968.

I’ll wait till the end of the year to see what his record is, but don’t forget he plays for a contender in the NL and not for a last placed team like the Phillies that only won 59 games the year Carlton won 27 of them. We will see if he can keep it up for a whole year and I’ll be the first to admit I was wrong.
