College Football-ACC Notes From Week 10
Posted by admin | Under NCAA Football Tuesday Nov 10, 2009CLEMSON—The Tigers improved to 4-2 in the league and can clinch a berth in the ACC championship game with wins over North Carolina State and Virginia in their two remaining league games. They hold the tiebreaker over Boston College, which also has two league losses, by virtue of their win over the Eagles.
GEORGIA TECH—Jonathan Dwyer went over 1,000 yards rushing for the second straight year. He’s run for 1,093 after a career-high 189 on Saturday. Dwyer and Tashard Choice (2006-07) are the only two Jackets to accomplish the feat in consecutive years.
DUKE—-Duke’s inability to run the ball effectively showed up in a big way in the defeat at North Carolina. Take away two scrambles by QB Thaddeus Lewis in the same third-quarter possession, and the Blue Devils were minus-21 yards on 17 attempts. Their running backs had a total of 6 rushing yards in the game.
FSU—-Florida State coach Bobby Bowden turned 80 on Sunday, making him one of only five coaches who hit that age while coaching college football. One of course, is Penn State’s Joe Paterno. Another is St. John’s (Minn.) University’s John Gagliardi. Amos Alonzo Stagg was 84 when he retired, and Upper Iowa’s John Dorman was 81.
Miami—-After ending the first quarter with a net minus-1 yard rushing, the Hurricanes revved up the running game and ended the afternoon with 268 yards rushing, most for the Hurricanes in just over two years (314 vs. North Carolina State, Nov. 3, 2007). In addition to RB Graig Cooper’s 152 yards, RB Lee Chambers had 67 on just 10 runs, and RB Damien Berry had 53 on 12 runs (two touchdowns).
