Big 10 News and Notes From Week 5
Posted by admin | Under NCAA Football Wednesday Oct 7, 2009Illinois—- Coach Ron Zook told Williams and backup Eddie McGee on Sunday night that he’s making a switch for this week’s home game with Michigan State. It’ll be McGee’s first start. McGee inherits an offense that ranks last in the Big Ten in scoring (17.8 points per game), last in passing efficiency (104.9 rating) and 10th in total offense (359.0 yards per game).
Iowa—-Arkansas State might have given Michigan a blueprint for handling Iowa’s stout defense. The Red Wolves spread Iowa across the field and took advantage of matchups against Iowa’s normally terrific linebackers. The Hawkeyes gave up too many third-down conversions (7 of 14) against an FCS school and will face another spread team in Michigan.
Michigan—-The Wolverines are tough to figure out — they had 380 yards rushing against Eastern Michigan, and then just 28 yards rushing against Michigan State. Granted, the competition has a lot to do with that, but not enough to explain that huge swing. The Wolverines will need to be able to move the ball on the ground against the Hawkeyes.
Michigan State—-The Spartans are now third in the Big Ten in rush defense, just behind Ohio State and Penn State, giving up just 96.4 yards a game, 2.8 a carry, with two rushing touchdowns allowed. The front seven was terrific against Michigan, particularly DT Jerel Worthy, DE Trevor Anderson and LB Eric Gordon.
Minnesota—LB Nate Triplett left Saturday’s game against Wisconsin two times. A shoulder stinger and ankle injury hampered him in the second half. The team’s top tackler wasn’t in pads during practice Tuesday
Ohio State—-Ranked 10th nationally in rushing defense, the Buckeyes are giving up just 83.4 yards per game on the ground this season, allowing just 2.7 yards per rush. OSU’s opponents have scored only four rushing touchdowns in five games.
Penn State—–Eight different players have scored Penn State’s 18 touchdowns. Only tailback Evan Royster (four touchdowns rushing, one receiving) has scored more than two.
