ACC College Football Notes From Week 5

Boston College—BC is 4-1 after pulling out a 28-21 home win over Florida State. It is the sixth straight year the Eagles have opened at least 3-1. RB Montel Harris ran for a career-high 179 yards and two touchdowns, scoring from 42 yards out late for the winning score. QB David Shinskie, in his second college start, was 12-for-21 for 203 yards and two touchdowns. He has thrown five TD passes in two games.
Clemson—The Tigers gave up a 40-yard punt return that left Maryland just a yard away from a touchdown and a 24-13 lead. QB Kyle Parker was 20-of-37 passing but couldn’t convert several key throws, was intercepted once and sacked twice, losing a fumble on his final play. Twice, the defense gave the Tigers the ball in Maryland territory at the 29- and 31-yard lines, and the offense couldn’t take advantage, losing a yard in three plays on one series and gaining just a yard on the second opportunity. PK Richard Jackson ended up missing field goal tries from 47 and 48 yards wide right.
Florida State—-FSU is 2-3 for the first time since 1983. The Seminoles are 0-2 in the ACC for the first time since joining it. With Georgia Tech visiting Tallahassee Saturday, a solid program capable of shredding the Seminoles’ defense, another loss is a clear possibility. Then it will be more likely the Seminoles will not have a winning season.

Georgia Tech—-Quarterback Josh Nesbitt put it all together in the 42-31 win over Mississippi State, throwing for a career-high 266 yards and a touchdown without an interception. He also ran 23 times and did not fumble once. Jonathan Dwyer’s first-quarter rushing touchdown was the 24th of his career, fourth-most in Tech history.
Miami—-Former walk-on Corey Nelms, a junior who saw his first action of the season on a limited basis against Georgia Tech but played a lot on special teams at Virginia Tech, made a terrific stop on the second-half kickoff that buried Oklahoma at its own 15-yard line. Coach Randy Shannon marked the play as a turning point because the Hurricanes recovered a fumble on OU’s first play and scored to take a 14-10 lead on the next play.
Virginia Tech—-The Hokies’ 327 passing yards were even more shocking when one considers they entered the game ranked 115th in the Football Championship Subdivision in passing yards per game at 112.8. WR Jarrett Boykin established career highs in yardage (144) and receptions (six) at Duke, including a 28-yard TD grab in the second quarter where he stole the ball from a Blue Devil cornerback.
