On October 6, 1998, former major league infielder Mark Belanger dies from lung cancer at the age of 54. Nicknamed “The Blade” for his tall, angular appearance, Belanger was considered one of the best fielding shortstops of all time. He won 8 gold gloves.
On October 6, 1985, Phil Niekro of the New York Yankees wins his 300th game. In becoming the 18th man to reach the milestone. The 46-year-old Niekro also becomes the oldest pitcher to throw a complete game shutout in major league history.
On October 6, 1978, George Brett hits three home runs for the Kansas City Royals in the third game of the American League playoffs, but the New York Yankees manage a 6-5 win on Thurman Munson’s eighth-inning home run.
