Boston Americans and the Pittsburgh Pirates Played First World Series in 1903
Posted by admin | Under MLB Tuesday Oct 6, 2009Boston and Pittsburgh played the first World Series in 1903 with Boston winning 5 games to 3. A proposal for a World Series was made in 1894 but did not materialize until a reconciliation from both leagues in 1903. In game one, Deacon Phillippe  pitched a 6 hitter and right fielder Jimmy Sebring hit the first home run in World Series history. Sebring drove in 4 runs and the Pirates took game one 7-3.
Game 2 did not disappoint either as Boston mirrored Pittsburgh’s previous performance. They evened the series when Bill Dinneen  threw a three-hitter and Patsy Dougherty walloped two homers in a 3-0 triumph. With the first three games played on consecutive days, the Pirates had to start Deacon Phillippe again on 1 days rest. He responded with a four hitter and a 4-2 win.
After a 3 day break the Series moved to Exposition Park in Pittsburgh. For Game 4, Pittsburgh once again went to their ace  Phillippe who won his third game and the Pirates took a 3-1 lead in the Series. The next day Boston came back with Cy Young who beat the Pirates 11-2 in game 5. Boston also took game 6 behind Bill Dinneen for a 5-3 win and tied the Series at 3 games apiece.
In game 7 on Oct. 10, Â Cy Young out dueled Deacon Phillippe and Boston won 7-3 and gave Boston a 4-3 series lead. On 10/13 the Series moved back to Boston for the final game of the Series.
Game 8 looked to be a pitchers duel as Dinneen and Phillippe went head to head to a scoreless tie through the first three innings. Phillippe battled on and would end up pitching his fifth complete game in the Series, but Dinneen bested him in the climactic finale, tossing his second shutout of the Series and notching his third victory, a 3-0 win and made the upstart Boston team champions of the First American League vs. National League World Series.
Bill Dinneen  started four of the eight games, completed all four of his starts, won three, had two shutouts and later became an American League umpire. Boston only used three pitchers for the whole 8 game series, Cy Young, Tom Hughes and Bill Dinneen.
