On October 1, 2006, Joe Mauer of the Minnesota Twins becomes the first catcher to win the American League batting title. Mauer bats .347, finishing just ahead of a pair of Yankees: Robinson Cano and Derek Jeter.
On October 1, 2006, Frank Robinson manages his final game for the Washington Nationals, as they lose to the New York Mets, 6-2. The Nationals had announced that Robinson’s contract, which expires on October 31, would not be renewed.
On October 1, 1978, the Boston Red Sox win their eighth consecutive game to force a playoff game that will decide the American League East. The Red Sox will play the New York Yankees, who lose their season-ending game to the Cleveland Indians, 9-2
On October 1, 1967, Carl Yastrzemski goes 4-for-4 as the Boston Red Sox defeat the Minnesota Twins, 6-3, clinching one of the most exciting pennant races in major league history. Jim Lonborg’s 22nd win wraps up the “Impossible Dream” for the Sox, who had finished ninth the previous season. The Sox will face the St. Louis Cardinals in the World Series
