A Tale of Two Rookie QB’s on Opening Day in the NFL
Posted by admin | Under NFL Monday Sep 14, 2009The two top rookie QB’s started for their respective teams today and one ( Mark Sanchez ) was a winner and the other one ( Matthew Stafford ) lost. The first QB led the Jets to a 24 -7 win over the Houston Texans.
Sanchez, the fifth overall pick in this year’s draft, threw for 272 yards and a touchdown in his NFL debut. He was 18 for 31 and had one interception. Sanchez seemed to be very poised in the pocket from the very out set of the game. There were a couple of times he even completed passes while being knocked down.
The second QB was not so lucky on opening day. New Orleans beat the Lions 45-27, Â extending the Lions regular season losing streak to 18 games.
Stafford was 16 of 37 for 205 yards and 3 interceptions but did rush for his first NFL TD. Stafford will get better as the season goes on but the wins may not come for the young man. I wrote sometime back around the time of the draft that I was not sure if Stafford should have been their first pick and maybe they should draft for defense since they gave up 517 points last year. They did very little to shore up their defense, and that’s why they may not win a game this year. That’s why they gave up 45 to the Saints.
