On August 23, 1982, Gaylord Perry of the Seattle Mariners is caught putting a foreign substance on the ball. Long suspected of throwing a “spitball,” Perry is ejected from a game for the first and only time in his career.
On August 23, 1980, Charlie Finley sells the Oakland A’s to the Levi Strauss company for nearly $13 million. During Finley’s reign in Oakland, the A’s won three consecutive World Championships. Finley also influenced the adoption of the designated hitter, World Series night games, and multi-colored uniforms.
On August 23, 1970, future Hall of Famer Roberto Clemente of the Pittsburgh Pirates posts his second consecutive five-hit game. Clemente, who becomes the first major leaguer of the modern era to collect 10 hits in two games, helps the Pirates to an 11-0 victory.
On August 23, 1957, 12-year-old right-hander Angel Macia pitches a 12-inning perfect game for Monterrey, Mexico to win the Little League World Series. Macia strikes out 11 batters to help Monterrey become the first foreign team to win the Little League Series.
On August 23, 1936, future Hall of Famer Bob Feller makes his first major league start and strikes out the first eight batters he faces. The Cleveland Indians’ rookie finishes the game with 15 strikeouts and a complete-game victory.
On August 23, 1931, Lefty Grove’s 16-game win streak comes to an end. A misjudged fly ball in left field allows the St. Louis Browns to score the only run of the game against Grove and the Philadelphia A’s. After the game, Grove berates fellow Hall of Famer Al Simmons, who was injured and unable to play left field that day.
